We wish we could tell you how much mileage you will get out of the factory clutch, but this varies depending on several factors. One of those factors is how you drive your automobile. Another factor is how you maintain the clutch. To get the most life out of the clutch, have it adjusted every 6,000 miles. We can do that here in our shop. Here are signs that the clutch needs more than an adjustment.
Different Feel
An older clutch will start to wear out internally. When this happens, the clutch will feel different underneath your foot. In most cases, the clutch will feel softer than normal. If the problem is a severe one, the clutch may give way and sink all the way to the floorboard. Generally, this is a sign that your clutch needs to be replaced. In some cases, we may be able to rebuild it.
Different Bite Point
Another problem that happens with how the clutch feels is a change in the bite point. The bite point is the point in the clutch where you shift the gears. As a clutch gets older, this point gets higher. Consequently, you may start to have difficulty shifting your gears because you are used to the bite point in a different place. If it is higher, it’s time to replace the clutch.
Burning Odors
You also need a clutch replacement if the clutch smells hot. This is an indication that the clutch is slipping. In other words, the clutch does not remain engaged even though you still have it pressed down. Unfortunately, this sends the power back to the engine from the transmission and creates the following problems. Fixing the clutch will resolve them.
Gear Problems
The first problem is difficulty shifting gears. Naturally, you need the power with the transmission in order to shift the gears smoothly. When the power is with the engine, you will grind the gears when you shift them. In addition, you may feel some resistance from the gear shift. This is the manual transmission fighting the gear shift.
Acceleration Lag
In addition to the gear problems, your vehicle’s acceleration is also going to lag. The reason why is that the transmission needs power so it can turn the driveshaft. When the power is with the engine, the driveshaft will not turn, and, as such, neither will your wheels.
